eTNW's inbound sister publication, Southern African Tourism Update, is undergoing a radical upgrade. The new site will be launched in February.
The publication’s readership has grown 57 % in the last year. Now, 24 years after its initial launch and 40 months after conversion to digital only, Tourism Update starts and exciting new multi-media chapter.
“We have learnt a lot about interactive publishing with three iterations of the monthly Digi-Mag since we dropped print,” said publisher David Marsh.
The big advantage of the Digi-Mag was the speed with which the overseas trade could get the edition and the interactive nature of digital media.
“The number of users of the Digi-Mag and the daily news site is now five times higher than the circulation of the print publication when we converted. Seventy percent of our users are returning visitors which is very high for an Internet site” said Marsh.
We are in effect using what we have learnt from the monthly Digi-Mag and combining it with the daily text news to create a single daily illustrated multi-media platform which in addition to news, now has video, authoritative columnists and features.
The new site has been inspired by the success of online publications like the Daily Maverick, Huffington Post and Newsweek.
News will be broken throughout the day and will be smartphone enabled.
A major beneficiary will be the advertisers, as we have restricted the number so their message will be clearly seen. There will also be opportunities for them to dominate the entire edition in languages like Spanish or German, said Marsh
