Cendant buys Orbitz for R8,2bn

CENDANT Corp’s recent announcement that it was buying Orbitz will make it the number two online travel agency, behind Expedia, as well as making it the fourth largest global travel company, reports Travelmole. The deal is reported to be worth $1,25bn (R8,2bn). Cendant is the 106th largest US company and is a hotel franchisor and real estate service company. Its wide range of products includes Galileo, Avis Rent A Car, Days Inn and Century 21 Real Estate. Cendant hopes to use the combination of Orbitz's reach and its own travel businesses to package deals that include airfare, lodging and car rental. (Lucy Siebert)
