IF the current public debate on the pricing policies of businesses in the Western Cape is allowed to continue without accurate pricing index statistics to back up claims of overpricing, it will have serious negative repercussions for the continued success of tourism in the province. This is the clear message delivered after a meeting of the Cape Town Tourism and Events Company (CTTEC) Board in Cape Town last week. According to Monwabisi Kalawe, chairman of the Board, a decision has been made to appoint an accredited research company to compile a pricing index to asses the extent of the problem that has lead industry role players and the public to accuse local businesses of "ripping-off" visitors to the Cape. Members of the board were unanimous in their decision that a policy should be adopted to effectively deal with this issue in future. (Miguel de Sousa)
