ALTHOUGH Sabi Sabi's new luxury Earth Lodge in the Sabi Sand Reserve does not officially open to the public until later this month, it is open for reservations.
Rod Wyndham has been appointed as general manager.
Wyndham, whose hospitality experience includes operating 'The Horse with No Name' restaurant at the Greyville Racecourse in Durban and who, previous to that, ran hotels on KwaZulu Natal's South Coast and in London, UK, told Travel Now that he and his wife, Lauren, would be very much playing the role of 'mine hosts' at the new lodge.
He added, "Luc Christen (gm Sabi Sabi) and myself are the only two out-and-out hoteliers employed by any game lodge in SA. This has allowed us to really concentrate on the hospitality side of running the lodge, which has traditionally been done by "promoted rangers".
"We've been able to introduce proper systems and controls which is making a huge difference to the overall operation.," he added.
Wyndham said that the unique selling point of Earth Lodge will be its "dual personality", combining a first-class safari experience with a "come-back-to-earth, holistic-type experience", with special attention being paid to the guest as an individual rather than as just one member of a particular Land Rover group.
