Eurotunnel ordered to cut prices

The European Commission has called on the British and French governments to look into the pricing structure on Channel Tunnel crossings, claiming charges are “excessive”.

According to the EC, passengers and freight services are paying too much for the tunnel link and the high prices charged to rail companies are being passed on to customers.

European Commission vice-president, Siim Kallas, said: "The Channel Tunnel is not being used to its full capacity because of these excessive charges.

"As a result, more freight is being carried on lorries instead of by rail, freight operators and their customers are being over-charged, and passenger are paying over the odds for their tickets. The current regime is also stifling growth in the rail sector."

Eurotunnel, operator of the Channel Tunnel, could face a 50% cut in the fees it charges operators.

The UK and France have been given two months to comply with the request. Should they fail to do so the governments will be brought before the European Court of Justice.
