I HAVE been a tenant at Cape Town Tourism, corner Castle and Burg streets, since April 2000. The then Section 21 company was well set up by Sheryl Ozinsky, in 1999. The organisation has subsequently been taken over by the Destination Marketing Organisation (DMO), now Cape Town Routes Unlimited. Apart from competing with opposition tourist information centres, or so-called ones, the centre has to deal with negative comments from many characters, like the author of ‘Facelift for Cape Town Tourism?’. This centre is still required to act as an "ombudsman" for tourists who have complaints about various operators/establishments. Whilst every-man-and-his-dog knows tourism backwards, it must be remembered that we are the people at the coalface of tourism, and have the necessary experience. Cape Town Tourism retains the staff backbone of outstanding personnel and the centre remains world-class. Angus Fraser See Speakers' Corner for more views on industry issues.
