Life's a 'dirty' beach in KZN

FOLLOWING South Africa's victory in June of being the first country outside of Europe to become an associate member of the international Blue Flag programme - which is synomous with high standards of bathing, safety, cleanliness and amenties at beaches - KZN Wildlife is to hold its annual 'Coastal Cleanup' programme on provincial estuaries and beaches on September 15. For the first time, the cleanup will also target the major rivers that cross the province as pollution from inland areas always finds its way to the marine environment, says Maureen Mndaweni from KZN Wildlife. Divers are also needed to participate in an underwater clean up held on the same day at Vetches Pier, Sodwana Bay and Aliwal Shoal. Last year's cleanup - which forms part of an international drive - saw some 4 893 volunteers collect 45 tons of litter along 527,5km of the KwaZulu Natal coastline, explains Mndaweni.
