Limpopo Transfrontier Park on track

THE Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which will cross the borders of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, is making progress, said the Limpopo Tourism and Parks Board at Indaba and should be completed by the end of 2005. Game transfers are a focus of the park’s development for this year. A total of 878 animals have already been transferred from the Kruger National Park to the Limpopo National Park. Central to the joint agreement between Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa is the re-establishment of old migration patterns of animals, which will contribute to conservation in the area. “Investigations into a crossing point over Limpopo River to link Gonarezhou National Park to the Kruger National Park have been completed. Final choice in terms of the crossing point will be based on feasibility studies which will also be made in the second half of this year,” said Johann Verhoef of Peace Parks. According to the Limpopo Tourism and Parks Board, tourism infrastructure development at the Limpopo National Park will commence in 2004/2005. (Lucy Siebert)
