Mpumalanga gaming board generates R15,3m from casinos

MPUMALANGA'S Gaming Board (MGB) generated R15,3m for the taxpayer over the past 12 months by taxing casinos, board chief executive Barry Mashigo said. The board, which operates as a semi-autonomous parastatal, hopes to boost this revenue to at least R17,8m this year. Mashigo stressed in a statement that the revenue exceeded the board's operational budget, generating a 'profit' of between R3-4m for the country. He said the board, which controls and regulates all gaming establishments, confiscated 193 illegal gaming machines from small time operators last year, leading to 95 convictions altogether. He added that the board was monitoring the construction of permanent casino developments at Emnotweni casino and hotel in Nelspruit and Champions casino near Witbank. (African Eye News Service)
