THE Namibia Tourism Board has confirmed several cases of polio in the country since mid-May, and recommends immunisation (in line with advice from the South African National Department of Health Expanded Programme on Immunisation) for travellers to Namibia. The recommendation is three-fold – visitors should get a booster dose of polio vaccine at least 10 to 14 days before arrival; wash all fruits and vegetables with a safe water supply before use; always wash hands with soap and water before handling food and after visiting the toilet. The Namibian Tourism Board says the incidence is small and it is restricted to small geographical areas. Kate Nathan (katen@nowmedia.co.za)
