A NUMBER of new properties have recently opened in Namibia, ranging from luxury island retreats to family-run lodges. The Namib Desert Lodge opened in November 2005 and is the perfect gateway to the Sossusvlei sand dunes. Major renovations to the existing guest farm have transformed the property into a stylish lodge offering 50 rooms, a thatched restaurant and a swimming pool. Family-run Uris Safari Lodge opened in July 2005 and is located in Namibia’s Oshikoto region, close to Etosha National Park. The Lodge lies within a 17 000-hectare private game. It offers 14 chalets with a choice of single, double or family bedrooms. The main communal area offers a fireplace and lounge, small library, swimming pool, wine cellar and cigar bar. The Stiltz, situated in Swakopmund on the edge of the Swakop, opened in May 2005. It offers views of the coastal town, the ocean and the famous dunes in Swakopmund. The accommodation features nine wooden bungalows set on stilts, all interlinked by wooden walkways. (Dorine Berger)
