New Zealand hikes visa fees

New Zealand will increase the cost of tourist visas by 60% in October.

The decision was taken to create a more sustainable immigration system, according to the government. The price of a visitor visa will increase from NZD211 (R2 315) to NZD341 (R3 740).

“Until now, our immigration system has been heavily subsidised by taxpayers. The changes we are making are shifting the cost to those benefiting from the system. We’re ensuring it is self-funding and more efficient,” said Immigration Minister Erica Stanford in a statement.

The increase will apply from October 1 and will affect all visa categories, including residence, temporary and student visas as well as tourist visas. Stanford said the government would continue to subsidise visa applications from fellow Pacific countries.

“The charges remain competitive in comparison to countries like Australia and the United Kingdom, so we are confident New Zealand will continue to be an attractive destination,” said Stanford.

The changes are expected to free up more than NZD563 million (R6,17 billion) for the government.
