THE NATIONAL Ports Authority has developed a new kind of adventure tourism attraction - that of visiting lighthouses along South Africa's coastline - with the launch of its SA Lighthouse Adventure Tour Operations (Salato). Eight lighthouses have been identified to form part of the operation, including the recently launched Great Fish Point Lighthouse near Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape and the Slangkoppunt lighthouse in Kommetjie, Western Cape. Salato will be managed by the Ports Authority's Lighthouse Services. The main objective is to develop these lighthouses and expand facilities to be able to offer guided tours, overnight accommodation as well as the option of spending a day running the lighthouse.
