THE new R32m Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island was launched in Cape Town on January 18 and will house an auditorium, a ticket office, conference facilities, souvenir shop, restaurant and exhibitions, announced President Thabo Mbeki at the keynote address.
The monument will service as a physical and historical gateway to the 474-hectare island whose most high profile claim to fame is that it is where former President Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for some 18 years during the Apartheid era.
Mbeki told the gathered dignitaries that funds are urgently needed to begin construction of the Gateway, adding that the corporate sector would be able to play a vital role if it "purchased" sections of the building.
