SOUTH African Tourism’s ‘Celebrate South Africa’ cultural extravaganza –a series of events and promotions designed to showcase the nation’s vibrant culture, unmatched experience and indomitable spirit - kicked off on Tuesday in New York with a concert at Pier 16 at South Street Seaport featuring some of South Africa’s most acclaimed artists. Radio station CD 101.9 and Land Rover Manhattan also took the event to the streets on the day of the concert with a special roaming safari featuring Land Rovers decorated with spectacular animal prints and carrying colourfully-costumed performers to entertain and delight crowds throughout the city. Listeners who spotted the “animals” were encouraged to report their “sightings” and be entered into a draw to win an unforgettable South African safari for two, courtesy of Micato Safaris and South African Airways. Ten South Street Seaport restaurants also joined in the cultural exchange with a variety of specially-themed offerings, ranging from South African burgers with Monkey Gland Sauce to Cape Town Haddock Fish & Chips and Durban Samoosas. South African wines, beers and liqueurs were also served. Miller Matola, SAT’s portfolio manager for The Americas said: “Our biggest challenge as a destination is to try to properly capture the diverse facets of the South African tourism experience. We want every New Yorker to enjoy just a sampling of what South Africa has to offer.” (Miguel de Sousa)
