STARWOOD Hotels and Resorts is planning to introduce fuel cell technology at two of its New Jersey, US properties: Sheraton Parsippany Hotel and Sheraton Edison Hotel. Fuel cell technology is a concept whereby direct fuel cells generate electricity with no combustion. Since the fuel is not burned, pollution is reduced, with water being the only by-product. Fuel cell power plants will provide about 25% of the power and 25% of the water needs of each hotel. The technology will reduce energy costs for the hotels. The hotel group anticipates extending the use of this technology to other brands in the US. (Heather Ruddock)
