Take note: LH clarifies OY tax

IN reference to the TNW’s Pulse Poll published in the September 15 issue, Lufthansa has advised that the new German departure tax (OY) on flights departing from January 1, 2011, will not apply to tickets sold with departures from South Africa unless the destination or a stopover occurs in Germany. For example: JNB-FRA-LON-FRA-JNB – there will be no stop in Frankfurt, only a transfer, thus no OY tax will be charged.

The new OY tax will be charged:

•    For all departures from Germany
•    For all departures from Germany, irrespective of POS. For example: FRA-JNB-FRA – sold in South Africa
•    Irrespective of POS, if the destination is in Germany or if an SO occurs in Germany. For example JNB-FRA-JNB – OY tax to be charged or JNB-FRA-LON/MUC-FRA-JNB – OY tax to be charged.

The charges are:

•    €8 for short-haul departures
•    €25 for medium-haul departures
•    €45 for long-haul departures.

Children/infants below the age of two without a seat are exempt from the charge. For domestic German tickets 19%VAT is applied on top of the €8.
