THE first Humpback whale of the 2006 season has been spotted off the St Lucia coastline, opening the season until the end of November. According to Riëtte Bennett of Advantage Tours, this is not particularly early in the season to spot the giant mammal, with the first sighting being around the same time for the last three years. Humpback whales migrate northward from their feeding grounds in the Antartic during the winter months, and pass through St Lucia on their way to their breeding grounds in Mozambique and Madagascar. Advantage Tours holds a whale watching permit and is allowed to go as close as 50m to the whales. Sue Lewitton (suel@nowmedia.co.za)
