Farmers and landowners in Italy’s South Tyrol province have taken steps to curb overtourism by installing turnstiles to regulate the flow of visitors.

Four farmers claim that the influx of tourists has damaged their land.

According to Carlo Zanella, President of the Alto Adige Alpine Club, thousands of tourists visit “Instagrammable” spots such as the Seceda and Drei Zinnen mountain ranges.

In pursuit of the perfect shot, some tourists trespass on private land. The farmers have now installed turnstiles, charging visitors an entry fee of €5 (R103).

While Italian law guarantees free access to natural parks such the Alps and Dolomites, but the landowners say they have not yet received any communication from authorities instructing them to remove the turnstiles.
