THE Department of Transport (DoT) has launched plans to dramatically improve the Johannesburg International Airport Interchange gateway access in to and out of the aiport. The R213m project aims to alleviate the daily congestion in the interchange, which hampers the effective and efficient running of airport operations. Said the DoT in a statement: “The JIA is an important corridor for the fledgling tourism industry and the movement of goods and services. However, the current major problem is that thousands of cars use the interlinking roads on daily basis but the traffic amounts impact negatively on mobility in the surrounding areas.” The upgrades are also “in line with the 2010 Fifa World Cup preparations” according to the DoT.
