EXTREME water shortages have caused the immediate closure of Fani’s Island Camp on the western shore of Lake St Lucia. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park Authority confirm that the closure applies to the hutted accommodation, camping and picnic sites and will remain in force until further notice. “It is simply impossible to manage a public facility of this nature if the ablution facilities and water supply to the public are out of action, and for this reason we have been obliged to close Fani’s until rains restore the water supply,” said Ian Porter, Ezemvelo’s regional eco-tourism manager for the coastal region. Members of the public wishing to visit the western shores of Lake St Lucia are advised to visit Charter’s Creek or False Bay Park. The level of Lake St Lucia remains low and staff are hoping for good summer rains to provide some relief. (Natalia Thomson)
