Acsa mandates physical checks for those wearing head coverings

UPDATE: Acsa has provided a statement regarding its policy mandating physical searches of all persons wearing head coverings.

“Physical searches will include examining passengers’ fixed headgear, headwraps, hijabs, burkas, doeks, izicholo or niqabs. At all times, the physical searches will be conducted with due sensitivity to recognised religious and cultural practices. This includes providing an appropriate space to conduct a physical search, should the passenger so prefer,” says Acsa’s statement.

“Acsa acknowledges that physical searches may cause discomfort to our passengers. Our security personnel have been instructed to ensure that all searches be conducted in a respectful and courteous manner.”

Acsa took to social media on Tuesday, April 23, to announce that it would mandate physical searches for anyone wearing a head covering.

“As part of our security measures, individuals wearing headwraps, hijabs, burkas, or niqabs will undergo a physical search. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a secure travel experience for all,” said South Africa’s airports manager on X, formerly Twitter.
