Air Mauritius will operate two commercial flights on December 4 (inbound and outbound), but sadly the island-state’s borders remain closed, with only Mauritian residents and long-stay visitors eligible to fly.

Inbound flight, MK851, will arrive in Johannesburg at 10h15 and outbound flight, MK852, will depart JNB at 12h00.

The airline said in a release that the flights were open for sale through the GDSs, on the Air Mauritius website or through its Johannesburg town office or the Mauritian call centre. Fares are filed for sale in both economy and business class. One-way and return fares are available.

Air Mauritius asks agents to make their clients aware of the Mauritian entry requirements for eligible passengers.

*Eligibility for travel

Mauritian nationals and residents, as well as tourists travelling for long stays are eligible to travel to Mauritius (this has been in force since October 1).

*Travel requirements for passengers travelling to Mauritius

Passengers travelling to Mauritius have to fulfil all travel requirements before their flight.

All prospective passengers (including children and infants) travelling to MRU must possess the following documents: A certificate of a negative PCR test administered not more than 7 days prior to the last point of embarkation. Only passengers whose tests are negative will be allowed to board flights to Mauritius. The original certificate must be presented at check-in, boarding and on arrival.

*Quarantine accommodation package

  1. On arrival in Mauritius, a 14-day in-room quarantine will be mandatory in a hotel approved by the authorities.
  2. A quarantine accommodation package is available online for passengers and includes, among others, accommodation on a full-board basis for the 14-day in-room quarantine.
  3. For information on the quarantine accommodation package, the airline recommends that agents and their clients consult the central booking platform on the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority website: https://booking.mymauritius.travel

*Tests

(a) All arriving passengers will have to undergo PCR tests on the day of arrival, on day 7 and on day 14 following arrival.

(b) If a PCR test reveals that a person is COVID-19 positive, he/she will be transferred to a public medical institution for treatment.

*At the airport of departure

  1. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to their scheduled flight departure time. This is due to the health, safety and precautionary measures in place, and check-in and boarding processes are expected to take longer.
  2. It is mandatory for all passengers aged 11 years and over to wear only surgical masks. A sufficient number of masks must be carried for the entire duration of the flight, from the time passengers reach the airport of departure to the time they leave the airport of arrival. Typically, they should carry one mask for every 4 hours.
  3. Passengers will also be subject to temperature checks at the airport.

*Baggage

Information on the baggage allowance is included on the ticket.

  1. Cabin baggage – one piece, not more than 7kg.
  2. No single piece weighing more than 32kg will be accepted at check in.
  3. Kestrelflyer Gold or Silver cardholders are eligible for one additional piece of 20kg on presentation of their membership card.
  4. Cabin baggage should include only essential items such as laptops, handbag, briefcase and baby items.

Air Mauritius said in the release that the company fully complied with the COVID-19 protocol in force in Mauritius and has implemented strict sanitary measures accordingly at all touch points.
