Amalfi gets an airport

Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport, previously a military airport, pilot school, firefighting centre and private airport, is undergoing a renovation to open as a commercial airport, with international flights expected to start as early as July.

Italy's scenic coastal town of Amalfi and its surrounding areas are wildly popular across the globe and Amalfi receives about five million visitors a year. Yet reaching Amalfi currently requires a flight to Naples, followed by multiple bus and train rides.

The new transport hub is 45 kilometres southeast of Amalfi town and 21 kilometres from Salerno – currently used as an alternative entry point to Amalfi.

In 2007, modifications were made to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport to allow for commercial flights, but in 2016 it closed completely.

This year, the airport's runway was extended in preparation for international flights. Additionally, a new passenger terminal is currently under construction, expected to be completed in 2027.

From July 11 this year, Volotea, a Spanish budget airline, will launch commercial flights from Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport to Cagliari in Italy and Nantes in France. In September, the carrier will offer connections between Amalfi and Catania, and Amalfi and Verona.
