Avianca Brasil, Brazil’s fourth-largest airline, filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday December 10, according to Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.
If granted, bankruptcy protection places a legal limit on the amount of money a bankrupt company must pay to those it owes.
The airline’s SA-based general sales agent, APG GSSA, told eTNW that, to its knowledge, all operation and flights are still operating as normal.
APG's spokesperson Matthew Simpson said: "Aviance Brasil has communicated that passengers can make reservations and purchase airfare with complete peace of mind, since all sales will be honoured and flights will be maintained"
According to Reuters, the airline has struggled for years with recurrent losses and recently faced the prospect of repossession of several of its aircraft.
