Business as usual despite Garden Route fires

Travel is unaffected by the wildfires that ignited in George and spread to other parts of the Garden Route District on October 29 and 30. However, authorities are keeping an eye on a fire burning in De Vlugt, 55kms out of Knysna.

Fancourt Hotel and Estate closed the Links golf course on Tuesday morning (October 30) as winds fueled fires on the Outeniqua mountains. However, the golf course was re-opened by the afternoon. No other accommodation establishments have reported an impact on operations.
Flights into the Garden route have not been impacted and are not expected to be.
The King George Protea Hotel by Marriot and the George Outeniqua Protea Hotel by Marriot confirmed that roads into the area were unaffected by the fires. However, the spokesperson for the Garden Route District, Herman Pieters, said that 1000 people had been evacuated from Karataraand and 200 people from the Western side of Rheenendal. This could impact traffic on nearby routes.

George Tourism told eTNW that the fires had moved into areas of the Garden Route District that were not likely to be travel destinations. Herman confirmed this and added that, as of yesterday evening, De Vlugt, Rheendendal, Keerhoek, Jonkersberg and Kraaibosch were the only areas where fires remained active. All other fires had been contained.
