Camels add to Angola’s tourism offering

Angola’s Namibe province has received 101 camels from the UAE as part of a project to boost the country’s tourism sector.

Abel Kapitango, Namibe’s Deputy Provincial Governor for the Political, Social and Economic Sectors, announced that the animals had arrived on Wednesday, June 12. They were found to be in good health and had already adjusted to their new climate, reports local publication Angop.

The project – a collaboration between Angola and the UAE – will introduce camels to 16 000 hectares of land. A feeding area and water boreholes with a capacity of more than 20 000 litres will sustain them.

Angola’s local government has said that the camels will live harmoniously with the area’s population, who will be allowed to raise the camels and generate an income from meat and milk production.
