Carnival on track for GHG targets

Carnival Corporation expects an 18% reduction in the intensity of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on its lower berth capacity basis in 2024 compared with 2019, just short of its target of a 20% reduction by 2030.

The cruise line says it will reduce its GHG emissions by 42% on lower berth capacity basis – well ahead of the International Maritime Organization’s 2030 goal of reducing emissions by 20-30%.

The measures Carnival has taken include upgrading its fleet with the latest HVAC systems and installing modern LED and lighting technology. Efforts have also been channelled towards efficient hull design and coating to minimise drag and reduce fuel consumption by 5-10% per vessel.

Carnival has committed to identifying further ways to lower GHG and other emissions from its ships while implementing lower-emission alternatives and new energy-efficient technologies.

“Since cruise ships generate their electricity from fuel, Carnival Corporation set out to uncover every area where energy can be saved and cut the amount of fuel used,” said the cruise line on its website.
