The Board of Airline Representatives of South Africa (Barsa) has announced the appointment of Fouad Caunhye as Chairperson, with effect from July 28.

Caunhye serves as Qatar Airways’ Regional Manager in Southern Africa, heading the commercial activities within the region. He leads commercial teams in Angola, Botswana, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

“Having more than 30 years’ experience within the airline industry he brings a wealth of commercial acumen that will undoubtedly assist Barsa to navigate complex industry issues and to deliver on its strategy,” said a release from Barsa.

“It is a privilege to be appointed Chairperson of Barsa, particularly at such a pivotal time for the aviation industry. I am delighted at the prospect of shaping a compelling new strategy for Barsa and look forward to working with the Chief Executive, George Mothema and the Board to accelerate and intensify Barsa’s voice in the industry while generating substantial value for the aviation industry.”

His appointment follows the departure of Wouter Vermeulen, who served Barsa for a period of 18 months. Vermeulen has since moved on to serve Air France KLM in the Greater China region.

"I very much look forward to continuing to work with Caunhye in his new role as Chairperson of Barsa. He brings a huge wealth of knowledge and experience and will provide important continuity for Barsa as we position the organisation for continued growth and success,” said Mothema.

Barsa represents the interests of its African and international members to the South African government, airport operators and other stakeholders in the airline industry with the aim of facilitating and further developing a safe, efficient and viable aviation industry in South Africa. It provides a single concerted voice on policy and other matters in relation to government and other stakeholders in transport, business and tourism.
