Delta Air Lines has teamed up with aviation start-up JetZero to develop a blended-wing-body (BWB) aircraft that is up to 50% more fuel-efficient than current models.

JetZero’s airframe design reduces drag, increases lift, and enhances fuel efficiency, all while using existing engine technology.

Delta will provide operational expertise through its Sustainable Skies Lab and consult on cabin design to enhance the passenger experience.

"Advancing revolutionary technologies like JetZero’s BWB aircraft is essential to addressing aviation emissions," said Amelia DeLuca, Delta’s Chief Sustainability Officer. "While we focus on reducing our carbon footprint today, this collaboration helps shape the future of sustainable air travel."

The BWB aircraft is expected to match the capacity (250 passengers) and range of today’s mid-range international aircraft, while operating with less noise and lower emissions.

Delta has worked informally with JetZero since 2021 to explore the commercialisation of the aircraft. The partnership aligns with Delta’s commitment to achieving nett-zero emissions by 2050.
