Europe’s top capitals for travel

25 Apr 2024

New research conducted by VisaGuide.World reveals the best European capital cities for tourists in 2024, based on cost, safety, whether or not they’re English-speaking, and friendliness.

The report highlights that travellers are considering more factors in selecting destinations beyond their uniqueness or beauty.

Researchers found that Europe as a whole was scoring lower for safety and friendliness and higher for costs compared with the same report for 2023.

Lisbon is the best European capital for 2024 travellers. With an average weekly budget of €385 (R7 880), it is also one of the cheapest destinations on the top list.

Amsterdam is second on the list, with the highest English-speaking score in continental Europe. The city slipped down the ranks from its top position in 2023 due to an increase in costs for travellers, up from €315 (R6 445) in 2023 to €465 (R9 515) in 2024.

Prague, with the highest safety score on the list, takes third place. Madrid, in fifth place, was found to be the friendliest European capital.

Europe’s top cities for 2024 are ranked as follows:

  1. Lisbon
  2. Amsterdam
  3. Prague
  4. Warsaw
  5. Madrid
  6. Zagreb
  7. London
  8. Rome
  9. Bern
  10. Paris
