German opportunity for foreign workers

The German Ministry of Labour is working on a new immigration strategy – yet to be approved the German Government – which would be an ‘opportunity card’ to bring more skilled foreign workers to the country.

Hubertus Heil, the German Minister of Labour, outlined the proposal for the press. “Every year, depending on our needs, we set a quota for how many people can come to Germany with the opportunity card to look for a job or an apprenticeship here for a certain period of time. During this time, they must be able to secure their own livelihood.”

Anyone who can show a qualification recognised by Germany (either an apprenticeship or a degree), immediately meets the conditions for the opportunity card. "But we also want to give people who have other strengths, and whom we need on the job market, a chance to come to Germany," Heil adds.

Those who meet three of four criteria will qualify for the upcoming opportunity card, reports BILD am Sonntag:

1. Has a foreign university degree

2. Has professional experience in their field of work of at least three years

3. Has stayed in Germany before or has German language skills

4. Is under 35 years old
