Heathrow warns of Xmas cap

21 Oct 2022

Although Heathrow Airport’s passenger cap is set to expire at the end of the month, the airport has proposed another cap during the Christmas period.

“We are removing the cap that was in place over the summer and discussing with airlines a number of more targeted options to proactively manage peak demand days over winter if needed,” a Heathrow spokesperson told British newspaper, The Mirror.

“Demand outlook remains uncertain, with growing economic headwinds, a new wave of COVID and the escalating situation in Ukraine. However, we expect peak days at Christmas to be very busy,” said the airport. “We are working with our airline partners to develop a more targeted mechanism, which protects passenger service during peak periods.”

“Airlines are really unhappy that another seat cap is in the offing, as they end up facing the brunt of consumer anger when flights are cancelled,” said Paul Charles, aviation consultant, according to The Telegraph.

“The possible seat caps will lead to hundreds of flight cancellations at one of the peak periods of the year, when families and friends are desperate to see each other. Holidays and short Christmas breaks will again be affected, even if flights are cancelled well in advance. Heathrow should have got its act together by now.”
