Japan tourism entry fees set to soar

Japan will introduce a dual pricing system in July in which foreign tourists will be charged more than Japanese residents at theme parks, historic landmarks and cultural sites.

At Junglia Okinawa, a nature-themed park opening in July, overseas visitors will be charged ¥8 800 (R1 076) per day.

The country’s shrines and temples have proposed charging tourists a daily rate of ¥1 000 (R122).

Pricing adjustments are expected at popular sites like Kyoto’s Kiyomizu Temple, currently ¥500 (R61) per day; Fushimi Inari Shrine (currently free of charge); and Nara’s Todaiji Temple, currently ¥800 (R98) per day. Officials will monitor the system before expanding it further.
