The ancient Japanese city of Kyoto has announced that it is hiking its tourist tax in 2026.

Currently, guests pay JPY200 (R24) per person per night for a room costing less than JPY20 000 (R2 438); JPY500 (R60) for rooms priced up to JPY49 999 (R6 095); and JPY1 000 (R120) for rooms that cost JPY50 000 (R6 095) or more.

Kyoto city officials have said they will implement five-tier tax rates next year.

Guests will pay JPY200pppn (R24) for a stay costing less than JPY5 000 (R610), and a maximum of JPY10 000 (R1 220) for accommodation costing JPY100 000 (R12 190) or more.

The city’s government expects the new fees to double revenue to tackle overtourism issues.

Following implementation, Kyoto will have the highest flat-rate hotel tax in Japan.
