With South Africa moving from national lockdown Alert Level 3 to Alert Level 1 tonight (Sunday, February), most of the remaining restrictions affecting the tourism sector have been removed, including an important step for the meetings and events industry.
Ceo of the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA), Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa, welcomed last night’s announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa as “critical” to the recovery of the tourism sector.
However, while government’s full “energy and effort” will now be focused on growing the country’s economy, President Ramaphosa cautioned during his “family meeting”, that businesses should ensure they continue to adhere to stringent to health and safety protocols to keep the number of infections down, something South Africa’s tourism industry has been emphasising through its Travel Safe, Eat Safe certification programme.
Sector restrictions eased
Restrictions affecting the tourism, hospitality and business travel sectors (including conferences and exhibitions) have been eased.
- Gatherings of up to 100 people are now allowed indoors for an event (provided the venue can ensure the social distancing protocols) and 250 people are allowed to attend an outdoor event.
- The curfew is from midnight to 04h00. This will enable restaurants to trade for longer and will give airlines more flexibility in their arrival and departure schedules.
- Restrictions on the sale of alcohol (previously only allowed from Monday to Thursday) have been lifted, with retail liquor traders only prevented from selling alcohol during the designated curfew hours.
- The 33 land borders that were closed during Amended Alert Level Three will remain closed but the 20 that were opened on February 15 will continue to operate, except during the designated hours of curfew.
- The same five international airports permitted to function under Level 3 will be allowed to operate under Level 1, namely: ORTIA (Johannesburg), King Shaka International Airport (Durban), Cape Town International Airport and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Nelspruit.
‘Confident’ there will be enough vaccination doses
The vaccination programme roll-out – which started 10 days ago – has seen more than 67 000 frontline health care workers vaccinated to date.
President Ramaphosa highlighted that a new batch of 80 000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine arrived in South Africa yesterday, pointing out that 11m doses of the vaccine had been procured from the pharmaceutical firm.
“Furthermore, 20m doses have been procured from Pfizer and 12 million from the World Health Organisation’s Covax global access initiative,” he said, noting that government was “in constant contact” with vaccine manufacturing companies.
This meant there was “complete confidence” there would be enough vaccination doses for every South African resident.
Phase Two of the vaccination roll-out is expected to start by the end of April/early May, targeting the elderly and those with co-morbidities.
TBCSA is currently lobbying government to prioritise frontline tourism workers during the Phase Two roll-out.
