LH trials VR in-flight entertainment

Lufthansa has started testing Meta Quest 3 mixed-reality headsets in its new Airbus A350 Allegris business-class cabins, offering an innovative entertainment experience.

The trial, launched in October, is available on selected routes, including Munich-San Francisco and Munich-Chicago O’Hare, reports Travel Weekly.

The headsets feature dual modes: mixed reality, blending the virtual and real worlds, and full virtual reality. Initial content includes movies, meditation, virtual chess, podcasts, and destination previews.

Passengers will enjoy movies on a virtual big screen, play chess with hand gestures, or explore virtual destination tours like flying over Manhattan – an immersive upgrade from traditional seatback content.

Currently, only Allegris business-class flyers can access the headsets, but this could expand with more aircraft deliveries. However, widespread adoption may depend on future advances in headset size and affordability.

Bjoern Becker, Lufthansa’s Head of Future Intercontinental Experience, says plans include streaming content and VR-enhanced live sports viewing.

"We've been looking at screens in front of us in the aircraft for about 40 years, so it is time for something different. The feeling of small space in the aircraft is something you can overcome with this technology.”
