LU workers to strike

Workers who maintain and upgrade lines on London Underground (LU) are to go on strike for 72 hours next Tuesday (24 April).

It followed a row over pensions and benefits, the Rail Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) union said. The union, which represents about 1,000 Tube Lines staff, said workers had voted 4-1 in favour of the strike which begins at 16h00 BST.

A spokesman for Tube Lines said the strike on the issue was "completely unnecessary". Union members want to join Transport for London's (TfL) pension scheme and receive travel concessions. Members say other people who work for LU receive these benefits and it was time "all groups of staff under the umbrella of LU receive the same rights and benefits". The staff involved work on the Piccadilly, Northern and Jubilee lines and provide a number of services, including emergency repairs, across the entire network.
