Major airlift boost for SA

Cathay Pacific, TAAG Angola Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines are boosting their weekly flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, according to notices published in the June 19 Government Gazette.

As reported in Travel News in January, Cathay Pacific will reinstate its service to South Africa from August 2.  It initially said it would run three flights a week to Johannesburg. However, it has now applied for the rights to operate daily flights between Hong Kong and Johannesburg; three flights a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) between HKG and CPT and one flight a week, on a Saturday, between HKG and DUR - a total of 11 return flights a week.

The airline confirmed it had received the necessary permission to operate flights to Cape Town and Durban, according to Simple Flying.

TAAG Angola Airlines, which currently operates daily flights from Luanda to Johannesburg and Cape Town, is planning to increase its service between Angola and South Africa to 23 flights a week, using B737-700 and B777-300 aircraft – three flights a week from Luanda to Durban; 13 flights a week from Luanda to Johannesburg and seven flights a week from Luanda to Cape Town.

Ethiopian Airlines intends to increase flights between Addis Ababa and South Africa from 21 to 35 weekly flights using its Airbus A350-900, 14 of which will operate direct to Cape Town.
