Researchers at airportparkingreservations.com have revealed the best airlines for pet-friendly travel, taking into account the cost and the diversity of pets allowed to travel in the cabin with the owner.

In the report released on October 18, Turkish Airlines ranks first when it comes to pet transportation as it flies cats, dogs, ferrets and small singing birds at the lowest cost of all major airlines, ranging from US$8 to $24 (R145-R436).

The runner-up is All Nippon Airways, which only allows one pet to travel in the cabin per passenger, however it will carry mammals and birds in cargo, accepting as many as nine different species. Prices vary according to size and weight.

US carrier, Spirit, came third with a flat cost of $125 (R2 270) to travel with a pet. It allows dogs, cats, birds and rabbits, limited to two per passenger.

According to the report, these are the most pet-friendly airlines:

  1. Turkish Airlines
  2. All Nippon Airways
  3. Spirit Airlines
  4. Sichuan Airlines
  5. Japan Airlines
  6. China Eastern Airlines and Emirates
  7. Air China
  8. Alaska Airlines
  9. Southwest Airlines
  10. JetBlue Airways
