Local documentary, My Octopus Teacher, had already won a myriad of awards when it collected Best Documentary at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards. Then the critically acclaimed documentary went on to make South Africa even prouder by winning an Oscar shortly thereafter.

On April 25, directors James Reed and Pippa Ehrlich accepted their Documentary Feature Award at the 93rd Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

The documentary was filmed over a year, documenting filmmaker Craig Foster forming a beautiful relationship with an octopus in False Bay near Simon’s Town.

South African Tourism recently published a video interview with Pippa on its YouTube channel. She spoke about her gratitude for the beauty of the filming location, among other things.

“Cape Town itself is an incredibly beautiful place, also an incredibly diverse place. I think Cape Town is one of the most important biodiversity hotspots on the planet,” Pippa said in the interview. “There are incredible dive sites all over the city, right on our doorstep, one of the most exquisitely beautiful environments on Earth.”
