Lufthansa Group says it is optimistic about the future of tourism and trade between South Africa and Europe since the easing of travel restrictions in Germany on August 1.

The airline group has now revised its flight schedules to increase capacity to the South African market to meet demand.

From August 24, Lufthansa will increase capacity to Johannesburg from Frankfurt, offering five weekly flights between the two cities.

Additionally, Lufthansa’s services between Cape Town and Frankfurt will increase to three weekly services.

SWISS services between Zurich and Johannesburg will also increase to five weekly flights, from September 1.

LH Johannesburg flights

From August 24, LH572 will depart Frankfurt at 22h05 on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, arriving in Johannesburg at 08h30 the following day.

LH573 will depart Johannesburg at 19h00 on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, arriving in Frankfurt at 05h35 the following day.

LH Cape Town flights

From September 1, LH576 will depart Frankfurt at 22h15 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, arriving in Cape Town at 10h00 the following day.

LH577 will depart Cape Town at 17h45 on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, arriving in Frankfurt at 05h40 the following day.

LX Johannesburg flights

From September 1, LX288 will depart Zurich at 22h40 on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, arriving in Johannesburg at 08h10 the following day.

LX289 will depart Johannesburg at 19h25 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, arriving in Zurich at 06h10 the following day.

In a creative development, Lufthansa has a new offering currently available on both its Johannesburg-Frankfurt and Cape Town-Frankfurt routes. The brand new ‘Sleeper’s Row’ is available in economy class. Customers can book an entire row of three or four adjacent seats to themselves for the duration of the flight. The surcharge for this is between €159 (R2 776) and €229 (R4 000) per route, and includes a mattress topper, comfortable pillow and blanket of business-class quality. Booking for a Sleeper’s Row can be done at the check-in or at the boarding gate.
