MSC on zero emissions mission

MSC Euribia, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), will set sail on the world’s first nett-zero greenhouse gas emissions cruise as it leaves the shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, on June 3, en route to its naming ceremony in Copenhagen on June 8.

Executive Chairman, MSC Cruise Division, Pierfrancesco Vago, said: “We will be proud to share with the entire cruise industry, and the world, the learnings that come for all from this, that nett-zero emissions cruising is already possible. Our purchase of bio-LNG will send a clear and meaningful signal to the market that there is demand from cruise lines for new and cleaner fuels, but we need governments, producers and end-users to collaborate and scale-up the availability of these much-needed and vital sources of power.”

MSC has purchased 400 tonnes of bio-LNG to show its commitment to the use of drop-in renewable fuels and energy transition measures towards the nett-zero voyage.

MSC’s London-based energy efficiency experts will monitor and optimise all systems on board to minimise energy demand and identify additional opportunities to improve energy efficiency in real-time while maintaining comfort for all guests. This includes the configuration of the engines, the speed of air-conditioning fans in guest cabins, together with the itinerary and speed optimisation.

Italian film actress Sophia Loren will christen the ship in Copenhagen at next week’s ceremony.
