New airport for Berlin

After 70 years of history (including playing an important role in the Berlin Airlift at the end of WW2, and having seen the reunification of East and West Berlin), the Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL) will soon shut down and its operations move to the new Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport (BER).

The inauguration of the new airport on October 31 was the first stage of the move across, which will be complete by November 8. As the airport starts its first week of operations, it is also heading into a transitional phase that lasts until the end of the week.

Lufthansa’s A320neo arrived at the inauguration event in special livery, as a one-off event, but LH will not move its Berlin operations to the new airport until Tegel closes its doors.

EasyJet, Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways have already moved their operations from Tegel to the new airport.  Presently, only Terminal 1 is open, and the opening of the new Terminal 2, which has capacity of six million passengers per year and is located next to Terminal 1, is scheduled to take place in 2021.
