From October 1, travellers from the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland will need to present a valid passport at the port of entry, in order to enter the United Kingdom.
Previously, only national identity cards were required from these travellers to cross the border.
There are however, some exemptions for travellers who fulfil specific requirements. Individuals with various permits under the EU Settlement Scheme are permitted to enter the UK on their identity card.
Citizens of the Republic of Ireland can continue to use their ID cards to cross into the UK beyond this date.
