Pax dissatisfied with SA airport parking

South Africans find airport parking facilities inaccessible and expensive according to the results of a social media survey by conducted by Acsa.

Acsa ran the survey “to understand why some passengers are opting for alternative parking options over airport parking” according to the organisation’s post on X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn.

The most popular way to travel to the airport was found to be e-hailing, with 46% of poll respondents on X and 43% on LinkedIn saying they used e-hailing over driving to the airport and parking or using public transport.

When asked what influenced this decision, an overwhelming majority (88% on X and 77% on LinkedIn) said the cost of airport parking was the main reason. A further 49% of X users said they also found the parking options inaccessible, and 60% of respondents said access to the payment machines at the airport was “very difficult”; 36% of respondents said they were “very dissatisfied” with the current airport parking options.

When Acsa asked what changes would encourage passengers to use airport parking, 83% of respondents suggested that lowering parking rates would make the option more appealing.

The survey also suggested a gap in awareness about Acsa’s parking solutions. For instance, passengers can pre-book parking at any Acsa airport for R72 per day if booked five days in advance. However, 62% of X respondents and 71% of LinkedIn users said they were unaware of this option.

Additionally, 44% of X respondents rated their understanding of Acsa’s parking products and costs as ‘one’ on a scale of one to four, with four indicating they were well-informed.
