Plastic bottles banned at Paris Olympics

Visitors to Paris Olympics competition sites next year will not be allowed to bring in plastic bottles.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Friday, May 26, that the city planned to ban single-use plastic when it held the games next year, Reuters reports. “We have decided to make the Olympic Games the first major event without single-use plastic,” said Hidalgo.

Sponsor Coca-Cola will distribute its products in reusable glass bottles and through more than 200 soda fountains. Reusable cups will be used during the event.

The organisers aim to halve the carbon footprint of previous Summer Games in Rio in 2016 and London 2012. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics took place behind closed doors due to the COVID pandemic.
