SA Ambassador calls for direct flights to Thailand

South Africa’s Ambassador to Thailand has said tourism co-operation between the two countries is lacking and has called for direct connections.

In an interview with local Thai publication, The Bangkok Post, Ambassador Darkey Africa said that while trade relations between South Africa and Thailand remained strong, co-operation in tourism could be improved.

The Ambassador said only 2 000 people had travelled between South Africa and Thailand in 2022. He added that the number should be much higher with the agreements and initiatives that are in place between the two governments to foster tourism.

According to Africa, these collaborative initiatives have not yielded results. He suggested that the initiatives should be monitored to make sure that they were in fact being implemented.

“We hope Thai Airways and South African Airways, which are national carriers, would consider the prospect of connectivity between the two countries.” But he added that it was up to government authorities to make direct connections an economically viable idea for airlines.
