Santorini ready for tourists after quakes

Santorini is safe and ready to welcome tourists following recent seismic activity that caused tourists and residents to evacuate the island.

Between January 26 and February 22, more than 20 000 minor earthquakes were recorded off the island, according to the Interdisciplinary Committee for Risk and Crisis Management at the University of Athens.

Seismic activity has subsided and evacuees have returned, schools have reopened and hotel construction resumed, according to CNN.

The state of emergency that was declared in February was lifted at the beginning of March. However, some safety measures will remain in place.

Cruise ships have resumed operations to Santorini, with Celestyal returning on March 23. Other cruise lines, including Regent Seven Seas, MSC and Celebrity have stops scheduled for April.

Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, told UK media that Santorini was fully prepared to welcome visitors. “Santorini and the neighbouring islands are safe, and the infrastructure is functioning normally. Scientists have given us the green light, residents have returned, and professionals across all sectors are gearing up for the season,” she said.
