Taj to expand into Africa

TAJ Hotels is looking to expand in countries such as Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya, Malawi, Zanzibar, Tanzania and Mozambique.

The company established its presence in Cape Town in 2010 and Taj Cape Town gm, Michael Pownall, says it is now looking to roll out more properties. These will be in countries where parent company of Taj Hotels, Tata, already has a presence with contacts and business partners, and in countries where market research shows there is an undersupply of quality hotels.

“We would look at operating hotels that are new builds, where we are working with local partners in those countries, or taking over on a management basis where those owners feel Taj could add value to their existing hotel,” he says.

The new Taj hotels will include meeting and conferencing facilities to appeal to a key business market. Michael says they will look to establish the brand in these countries as soon as possible.
